USTCAF 2010 Board Election

Please cast your vote through email voting before July 7th, 2010 deadline. Fill in and Forward/Email the following ballot to: ustcaf2010@yahoo.com a) USTCAF board is consisted of 10 (min) to 20 (max) members. There is no requirement on number of candidates you can vote for (although it’s recommended to vote for 10 or more). b) USTCAF election requires more than ¼ member quorum, so it’s important to cast your vote if you have donated to AF. I love USTC, and would like to help make USTC better. It has been a truly humbling experience for me. I did not realize how challenging it was to lead a non-profit organization. Many passionate alumni I met through the years convinced me that it is a worthy cause to continue spending time on. We made concrete progress towards a united alumni foundation but left a number of great ideas unfinished. AF is great, but we can make it greater for the next 100 years. If elected to USTCAF board, I'd like to continue push for the following initiatives: 1). Work toward one united, single USTC alumni foundation with one objective - to help USTC to be the first class university that provides first class education in China. The other things will take care themselves. 2). Strategically use USTC Alumi Foundation's fund for the biggest impact. Including promoting USTC's public image, sponsoring key positions (professorship, PR role etc)in USTC. I believe this will help the fund raising efforts for the alumni foundation. 3). I believe that the route we took AF to is the correct one. Being on the AFGB for four consecutive years, I witnessed AF's golden times and downturns. After living twelve years in the States, I start to value democracy, and more importantly, start to see ups-and-downs as a witness of vitality. I am confident that the leaders in this AF term will be the strongest ever. Still, I am eager to contribute to the last drop of my passion. I served a number of GB terms, and was the vice chair in one of them. I also raised our first corporate matching fund, and set up the AF resolution process and wrote the first couple of resolutions myself. The AF's level of visible activities is now lower than in previous years. If elected, I'd like to rally our membership base to put more energy into reinvigorating various AF programs. It takes nothing fancy, just old fashioned hard work, starting with regular newsletters, cleaning up various sub/special funds, establishing routine working relationships with regional alumni clubs. Another important task I'd like to lead or contribute to is formalizing the various aspects of the AF operations, such as accounting, treasury, election, and board meetings. Have been in financial industry for 15 years. Ph.D from Princeton I was in the first several AF boards. After a decade of busy career, during which time I haven't been involved in the AF business, I feel like coming back and make some contributions. I'm proud to be the founding member of USTCAF, and have been a financial engineering professor of USTC since 2003 with two students graduated, initiated and built the USTC Shanghai Center for Financial engineering and asset management. Mission Statement:
The foundation is founded to (1) promote the excellence of members of The University of Science and Technology of China, including students, teachers, and alumni in USA and elsewhere; and (2) promote the academic and cultural exchange between The University of Science and Technology of China and researchers in USA.

USTCAF is an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, independent of USTC.

Your donation to USTC Alumni Foundation is fully tax-deductible, unless your donation is more than 50% of your total income.
Many companies match their employees' donations to USTCAF. So your donation may be doubled or even tripled.
Some companies only match donations to accredited US educational institutes, but not donations to USTCAF. However, some of these companies do match donations to United Way, while many United Way branches forward donations and matching gifts to USTCAF too!

Currently USTCAF issues the following awards in USTC:

Outstanding New Student Award (since 1996) -- around 30 each year.
Provincial top 50, or Olympiad medalists.
Excellent New Student Award (since 2001) -- around 10 each year.
The best student of some key high schools whose alumni funded the award.
Goodwill Fellowship (since 1999) -- around 200 each year.
Assist financially challenged students.
Young Faculty Career Award (since 2001) -- 6 or so each year.
Help young faculty research in and retain promising ones.
Teaching Excellence Award (since 2004) -- 2 each year.
Retain excellent education quality in USTC.
